A UDOT Project
Student/Pedestrian Safety

An important goal of the 2000 West project was to ensure that every effort is made to keep the students who attend the three schools on the corridor as safe as possible.

At Syracuse High School, a special student “Construction Safety Team" was organized to keep a focused safety message communicated to the students throughout the project.  Members of the Committee met several times and created the name "The SMART Team!" SMART stands for Safety Management and Relations Team! The team had several meetings and developed a communication plan to reach out to students on a regular basis to keep them informed about activities on the project and how to stay safe. They coordinated with the school publications and administration to produce public safety messages that communicated to both students and parents who attend the school.  The Committee members were introduced to many project participants and presented unique opportunities to learn about construction and highway design, public participation and communications. SMART was comprised of high school juniors who followed the project through the end of construction.

The SMART Team met regularly with the Project Team and was introduced to and experienced hands-on exposure to a number of Enginnering and Construction diciplines. Syracuse High School has given this program outstanding  support and has assigned a dedicated coordinator to provide assistance and direction for the Committee. The UDOT Project Team has also committed a professional communications expert to work hand-in-hand with the committee to  train them and direct their communication efforts.

Likewise, Syracuse Junior High School, under the direct of their Community Council, will work with the project communication team to assembly a group of teachers and students who will participate in a special safety awareness program and be taught basic safety lessons and awareness of construction and how to prevent even the appearance of safety problems.  The program will consist of UDOT Personnel who will present formal training; construction company personnel who demonstrate the dangers of heavy equipment and the active work areas of a project and the communication team that will help students and teacher craft messages to keep their fellow students and teachers aware of project activities and progress with an eye singled to safe behavior around the project.

At Syracuse Elementary, the project will also work with school administrators to help students become more aware of safe behavior as they will have to navigate through construction from time to time getting to and from school.  The project communication team is working with Davis School District Transportation to develop a special “bus bridge” that will be available to students who walk to school when the project is very active near the school.

In addition, UDOT has several student oriented safety programs that include safety assemblies, classroom instruction and on-site tours that will be presented in cooperation with each of the schools.

Parents are advised to watch for information from your children they bring home from schools to keep children safe while moving around the construction areas.
